Basic information about Krakow and Poland

Krakow is situated on the south of the Poland on the Wisla bank. Krakow is an old capital of Poland and capital of the Malopolska region. Detailed geographical location are: 50° 03’N 19° 56’ E.

Krakow has about 760 thousands of inhabitants. There are also few thousands of students due to the many academic institutes. Time zone is Central European in winter GMT+1, in summer - GMT+2.

Total area of Krakow is 326.8 km². It is second after Warsaw biggest city in Poland and one of the oldest. Since about X century it is one of the most important urban center of this region of Europe.

Main square

Main square is a center of Krakow. Planned in the middle age is the one of the most well-troddened place. All tourist has to visit this place when they come here. On the main square there are holding all important events like new year eve. Nearby main square are located many historical buldings like Mariacki church or old town hall.

Wawel Royal castle

Past residence of Polish queens. One of the most important monuments in Poland. It was built on the stone where how the legend describe was a cave inhabitanted by a dragon. There are different version about a tamer which killed the dragon. One this merit gives Krak queen and the other says that clever cobbler was the killer. Whatever since then Krakow have got rid of this green monster.

Quick developement of the city was related to moved capital of Poland from Gniezno to Krakow. The best period of developement city was during government of Big Kazimierz. In the XVI Wawel was rebuilt in the Renaissance ages.
